Singer Sinéad O’Connor has died, Irish media has reported. The Nothing Compares 2 U singer, who shot to fame in 1990 with her biggest hit, was aged 56.
The Irish Times has run the news of her passing on its website this evening (Wednesday). The singer, originally from Dublin, had a career which spanned 10 studio albums.
Her first album, The Lion and the Cobra, was released when she was 20. It was hailed "a sensation", reaching gold record status and earning O’Connor a Grammy nomination. She worked with producer Nellee Hooper on her second record I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got and released it to acclaim.
Nothing Compares 2 U was named the number one world single in 1990 by the Billboard Music Awards. The video for the song became as iconic for music as for her trademark shaved head and the tear shed during the close-up footage.
