Shoppers, brace yourselves and give those bananas an extra shake before you pop them in your trolley otherwise you might be in for bringing home some eight-kegged unwanted guests.

Even though occurrences are rare, your seemingly harmless bananas could be hiding an uninvited squatter, all thanks to those balmy climes they're grown in.

According to The Express, other countries usually avoid pesticides with their peel enough of a defence against bugs. But this means that now and then, some bananas come with a petrifying plus-one: a massive spider that's not from around here. The National Centre for Reptile Welfare has put out a word of caution: "Spiders and other invertebrates may very uncommonly be found in bunches of bananas, with small lizards and amphibians also being encountered.

Most banana plantations are organic and do not use pesticides, which can lead to rare occasions when stowaways may be encountered in produce in the UK." These freeloading critters likely aren't your average household spider but something much more sinister from foreign shores.
