Jordan Hooper required dozens of stitches after what is believed to be a 7ft black tip bit him when a wave flung him off his board.
The 17-year-old said the predator "grabbed completely around my leg" and left him feeling like he was going to pass out. He was surfing about 100 feet from the shore near Ormond Beach, Florida, US, when he took a plunge but on kicking to propel himself back to his board the shark struck.
