Shane MacGowan's widow to travel to Scotland for special tribute to Pogues legend

The widow of late Pogues frontman Shane MacGowan is coming to Scotland for a special tribute to the Fairytale of New York star.His songwriter pal John McLaughlin is celebrating the Irish singer with a show at the Edinburgh Fringe and Victoria, 58, said she’s looking forward to the unique gig.It will honour his contribution to the music industry with songs, stories and artwork.She said: “Shane loved Scotland and the Scots people, and he was deeply fascinated with Scottish culture and history and he felt the Scots and the Irish were very closely related.“Some of his dearest friends were Scottish – people like big Charlie Maclennan, who was The Pogues road manager, Jock Scot the poet and Bobby Gillespie from Primal Scream.“He was a keen Celtic supporter and he always enjoyed playing to Scottish audiences.

I am very grateful to John and to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival for celebrating Shane.”Boyband producer John, who wrote a string of hits for Busted, Westlife, Blue and 5ive, met the singer in 2001 when they went on a two-day bender in the Alpen Lodge in Glasgow.The pair ended up jamming together and the result was the song Tomorrow Belongs to Me, which forms the centrepiece of John’s Fringe show about Shane’s life and their unlikely bond.For the Love of Shane MacGowan will run for five days and Victoria hopes to get over for the last two nights.The music journalist, who lost her husband, 65, last November after an on-off relationship spanning four decades, said: “I love the song that Shane and John wrote, but more than that I love that Shane had such a lot of fun with John every time they were together.” John, the lead singer with Johnny Mac and the Faithful, said he’ll never forget his first meeting with Shane.Get the
