A sewage leak in the River Tay near Stanley was caused by a blocked pipe backed up with toilet waste.After initially saying the system was working as it should - despite a video showing dirty water flowing into the river from a displaced manhole cover and a blocked filter - Scottish Water later confirmed the issue.The debris blocking a treated water outlet led to all manner of unpleasant discharges into the Tay at Stanley Mills on July 10 and the following days.Stanley residents Brooke Labagh and Chris Rynn filmed ducklings feeding along a river bank littered with ‘unflushables’ that had escaped when a pipe backed up.With fellow outdoors lover Nicola Murray, the couple highlighted the mess, uploading a video of escaping waste just by the waterside on Twitter.Scottish Water promised to fix the situation after initially saying all its plant equipment was working to plan.Commenting, Scottish Conservative MSP Murdo Fraser said: “This has been a very concerning sewage incident in the River Tay, beside Stanley Mills, and must be alarming for local residents – some of whom swim in the water there from time to time.“I contacted Scottish Water upon hearing about the awful matter, and they have now confirmed that the problem was caused by a blockage found within a section of the sewer there.

They have stated that their staff are working hard to remove this obstruction.“I hope this problem is fixed timeously and I can assure residents that I will be keeping an eye on the situation to try to ensure that we don’t see a repeat of this problem.”A Scottish Water spokesperson said: “We attended after receiving reports of a discharge in the River Tay near the Stanley Waste Water Treatment Works.“Following a second round of investigations,
