Students in Scotland have three times less student debt their peers in England, according to SNP -commissioned analysis. The figures showed that Scottish graduates are almost £30,000 better off than those down south.

According to figures from the Student Loan Company, Scottish students in 2023 graduated with an average loan balance of £15,430.

This includes the tuition fee loan debt of Scottish domiciled students studying elsewhere in the UK. In contrast, figures from the House of Commons Library from the same year revealed that the average student debt on graduation in England had “risen rapidly” to around £45,000.This is almost three times the sum incurred by Scottish students.

The SNP has said that the Scottish Government's removal of tuition fees for higher and further education has been "life-changing" for graduates.
