A Scotsman will attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the fastest marathon while wearing a kilt.Stephen Molloy is running the Edinburgh Marathon on Sunday, May 26, and hopes to break the current record of 3 hours and 20 minutes.

The 33-year-old will don full highland dress - including a suit jacket, kilt and sporran for the race - to raise cash for research into motor neurone disease (MND) for late rugby legend Doddie Weir's charity My Name’5 Doddie Foundatio n.Stephen, who has already run the New York, Copenhagen and London marathons in recent years, hopes to crush the three-hour barrier during the 26.2miles course. The Aberdeen man said: “I’m feeling ready and excited about Sunday’s race but the full Highland dress will make it a pretty challenging run."The requirements for the record mean I have to wear the jacket, waistcoat, and shirt along with a sporran and the iconic My Name’5 Doddie tartan kilt."And I’m not allowed to take it off at any point!

I’m thankful the weather is looking on the cooler side for Sunday, but it is Edinburgh after all, and that could all change.“Doddie continues to be a massive inspiration to so many people, and I’ll be thinking of him and the MND cause as I aim to break the record on Sunday.”The word record is currently held by Canadian Benjamin Denis Bilyard at the TCS Toronto Waterfront Marathon in October last year.Stephen had originally planned to run alongside fellow fundraiser Ewan Jack, but after suffering a knee injury, he is unable to take part, so Stephen will be running solo.Ewan will instead take on the half marathon at the Great Scottish Run in October – again donned in a full kilt.
