Scots university adopts gender violence policy after death of student

A Scottish university has been recognised after tackling gender-based violence in memory of a student who took her own life.Emily Drouet was just 18 when she was found dead within her halls of residence at Aberdeen University, days after she was choked and slapped by Angus Milligan in March 2016.

Milligan was subsequently convicted of physically and verbally abusing law student Emily after he admitted to assaulting and threatening her during a campaign of abuseFollowing her tragic passing, Emily's mum Fiona Drouet, launched EmilyTest, and created a gender violence charter.

It's a charity that aims to tackle gender based violence in Education. It has now been adopted by Aberdeen University in a bid to improve and save lives.Mrs Drouet told BBC Scotland News: "We do gain huge comfort in knowing that we're doing everything possible - and institutions are doing everything possible - to make sure it doesn’t happen again."The EmilyTest initiative hopes to ensure universities and colleges have appropriate measures in place around violence prevention and support.

Ms Drouet hopes that all Scottish universities and colleges will also adopt the charter and said there are also plans to expand it to the rest of the UK.She added: "They have really gone above and beyond to meet the standards and principles in the charter.
