Elizabeth II (Elizabeth Alexandra Mary; born 21 April 1926) is Queen of the United Kingdom and the other Commonwealth realms. Elizabeth was born in London, the first child of the Duke and Duchess of York, later King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, and she was educated privately at home. Her father ascended the throne on the abdication of his brother King Edward VIII in 1936, from which time she was the heir presumptive. She began to undertake public duties during the Second World War, serving in the Auxiliary Territorial Service. In 1947, she married Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, a former prince of Greece and Denmark, with whom she has four children: Charles, Prince of Wales; Anne, Princess Royal; Prince Andrew, Duke of York; and Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex.

Scots to enjoy four-day bank holiday weekend to mark Queen's Platinum Jubilee

The UK will get an extra four-day bank holiday this summer to mark the Queen's Platinum Jubilee - and Brits are being encouraged to throw the biggest party ever to celebrate.This year will be Her Majesty's 70th year as sovereign, with several events planned to mark the unprecedented milestone between June 2-5.Queen Elizabeth II is set to be the first monarch to reign for seven decades and will be 96-years-old by the time the landmark is reached, Teesside Live reports.Two extra bank holidays, on Thursday, June 2 and Friday, June 3, have been confirmed for the celebration - creating a four-day weekend.It is hoped millions will gather at street parties, host a Big Jubilee Lunch or get together around the county to thank the Queen for 70 years of service, but also to thank neighbours, family, friends, communities, the NHS and key workers for their support over the past year.Celebrities Ross Kemp, Gary Lineker, Gareth Southgate, Levi Roots, Prue Leith, Alan Titchmarsh, Ellie Simmonds and Lorraine Kelly are among those backing the special Thank You Day on Sunday June 5.Former EastEnders actor Kemp said: “Mainly it’s thank you to our Queen who has served for 70 years.“Her resilience has become our resilience.
