A high school in Trafford is to close whilst emergency repairs are carried out on a gas pipe. Altrincham College pupils were first told to stay at home on Tuesday after nearly all the school's buildings, except the sixth form classrooms, were left without heating or hot water.

It is the latest building issue to hit the school in a matter of months after it was also caught up in the reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC) crisis last summer. Try MEN Premium now with our amazing New Year offer...

"Unfortunately, the gas pipe which serves all of school (except the Sixth Form classrooms) needs replacing urgently; until it is replaced we have no heating or hot water. "We have spent the last few days excavating the ground and running tests.
