The annual charity football match Soccer Aid is taking place on Sunday 9 June to raise money for UNICEF, but despite training only having started two days ago, one of the celebrities taking part has already sustained an injury.

Made in Chelsea star Sam Thompson turned up to the media launch of Soccer Aid on Friday 7 June wearing all the proper football kit – except for his boots.

Instead, as he chatted to OK!, he was wearing blue Crocs to help his feet heal from an injury he could have avoided if he had just listened to a football legend. “I was lying down, putting my boots on and admiring my new boots and Theo [Walcott] said to me, ‘you need to get a size larger or you’ll get blisters,’” Sam laughs. “I said, ‘no, these boots are too good to take off,’ and within half an hour I had blisters and he said, ‘told you, mate!’ That’s why I am wearing Crocs – I’m airing my feet.” Laughing with fellow players Mo Farah and footballer Theo, who confirms he did warn Sam about the boots (“I’ve been playing football for years and I told him to go up a half size but he didn’t listen”), Sam is making his debut for the England team at Soccer Aid and will be joined on the pitch by teammates including Stuart Broad, Danny Dyer, Tom Hiddleston and Sam Quek, as well as professional football players David James, Jill Scott, Joe Cole and Jermain Defoe.

They’re playing against the World XI squad, featuring Usain Bolt, Tommy Fury, Roman Kemp, Lee Mack, Martin Compston and footballers like Roberto Carlos, Patrice Evra and Eden Hazard.
