Sailors have been injured in a huge fire that broke out amid explosions on a US battleship. The USS Bonhomme Richard caught fire this afternoon while pier-side at the Naval Base in San Diego, California.

Thick smoke could be seen billowing off the Wasp class amphibious assault ship. Local reports claim that 11 sailors were injured in the fire.

It appears that no one has been left badly wounded in the blaze. Loud booms have been heard coming off the ship, although it is currently unclear what has caused them.

It appears that the source of the fire was below the waterline, The Drive reported. Fire fighters from across the San Diego area were called to the tackle the blaze.
