Ryanair has slammed a decision made Spanish Air Traffic Control as 'nonsensical' after hundreds of holidaymakers were left stranded at an airport in Majorca.

Scores of British passengers had their flights cancelled at Palma de Mallorca airport on Thursday following summer storms on the island.

People were left sleeping on floors and were stranded for hours as flights were axed, with others delayed for hours. Ryanair apologised to customers caught up in the chaos and said a 'nonsensical decision' was made by Spanish Air Traffic Control to block planes from landing.

The airline said the decision was made due to the weather but that it 'made no sense given there were no weather issues in Palma'.
