After being under the cosh for much of the opening exchanges, the Saints, who were thrashed 9-0 by United in their last meeting with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side, took the lead when Che Adams' drive from the edge of the box deflected off of Fred and into the back of the net.
Adams had been slipped in by a clever flick from strike partner Adam Armstrong and Fred failed to get close enough to him to prevent him from firing a shot goalwards.
