Revealing his selections after watching United’s 3-0 win over Brentford, there were more than a few surprises in his team. The likes of Paul Scholes, Rio Ferdinand and Eric Cantona missed out on a place in Keane’s side, while the former midfielder also left himself out.
Instead, Peter Schmeichel, Gary Neville, Gary Pallister, Jaap Stam, Denis Irwin, David Beckham, Bryan Robson, Paul Ince, Ryan Giggs, Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo got the nod. You’ve got players turning up, you’ve got goals in the team, you’ve got characters, you’ve got a bit of height, physicality, pace, and we’d obviously play with a high line!” Fellow pundit Jamie Carragher then chipped in to ask: “Who’d be the manager?” Keane wryly responded: “Big Ron Atkinson.” There is of course no debate over who United’s greatest manager during the Premier League era is, with Ferguson the club’s most successful boss of all time.
