Sunderland striker Ross Stewart is a target for north east rivals Middlesbrough but Rangers are unlikely to renew their interest in their summer target.
New Riverside boss Michael Carrick has identified the 26-year-old as someone who can help get Boro moving up the Championship with the side currently languishing in 14th spot in the table.
Carrick needs more firepower and ex-Ross County man Stewart caught the attention of clubs south of the border after netting 26 goals for the Mackems last season as they won promotion from League One through the play-offs and back to England’s second tier.
Stewart then featured for Steve Clarke’s Scotland in the Nations League games at the end of the season and has netted five goals in the Championship for the Black Cats and Carrick is keen to sign the free-scoring frontman, who is set to return from injury after the World Cup break, is a top target for ‘Boro.
