Pioneering radio station founder Ronan O’Rahilly has died following a seven year battle from vascular dementia. The Irish businessman was 79 when he died on Monday 20 April 2020 – with the radio station that he launched back in the 1960s confirming the news.
Ronan famously launched the UK’s first ever pirate radio station, Radio Caroline, in 1964 when he boarded a boat and set sail for international waters off the coast of Essex to be able to broadcast across the country.
The music fan launched the station to challenge the BBC which had a monopoly over the airwaves in the UK and a reluctance to play rock music, and Radio Caroline continues to broadcast to this day.
