Robin van Persie has revealed how Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney gave him a pep talk before his wonder goal against Aston Villa in 2013.

Van Persie scored a hat-trick, including one of the most memorable Premier League goals ever, in a 3-0 win at Old Trafford which secured Sir Alex Ferguson’s side their 20th title.

The Dutchman’s second goal came from a sublime Rooney ball over the top as he volleyed home from just outside the penalty area.

And while reflecting on his time with the Red Devils and his highlights at the club, the striker explained how Rooney had told him he would be looking to find him in behind the defence.
