Robert De Niro has recently discussed the astonishing measures he took for his iconic role in the '80s blockbuster, Raging Bull.The film chronicles the journey of middleweight boxing champ Jake LaMotta, portrayed by De Niro, showcasing both his professional highs and lows and also his rocky private life.
Under the direction of Martin Scorsese, the movie delves into the boxer's troubled personal affairs. As part of preparing for the part, De Niro had to gain a staggering 60 pounds, and he shared the severity of this experience on the recent episode of Off Menu Podcast.
Chatting with hosts James Acaster and Ed Gamble, the now 81 year old actor divulged: "when I was getting the weight, I had to eat in the morning three full meals, which was hard to do, and then digest the food, to eat lunch and then dinner.
It's kind of fun for the first 10, 12, 15, pounds, and [then] it's drudgery." In the past, Robert has referred to the part as 'one of the toughest roles he's ever played,' particularly because of the massive weight gain involved.
