A convicted paedophile who changed his name and lied his way to the top of Robert Burns World Federation is facing a police probe over concerns about children.
The group’s former president Marc Sherland concealed his true identity for more than a decade and gained access to vulnerable young people. The Sunday Mail unmasked him last month as Douglas Stuart Hammond, 67, convicted of abusing two boys aged eight and 10 in 1991 while playing “wrestling games”.An alarmed former friend contacted the NSPCC after our report, worried about two children Sherland had connections with who they believe were vulnerable. The former friend said: “He pulled the wool over all of our eyes for years.
I’m worried about two children who I know he had links with. I couldn’t live with myself if I didn’t report my concerns. I believe that paedophiles never change and will always try to find ways to exploit children.”Sherland, of Erskine, was president of the Robert Burns World Federation and a member of many other Burns clubs.
He resigned in December as his sordid past emerged.Calls have been made for the Scottish Government to change the law to stop paedophiles from being able to alter their identities. An NSPCC spokeswoman said: "As the Helpline is a confidential service we are not able to reveal details and information about contacts it has received and dealt with.” Don't miss the latest news from around Scotland and beyond - Sign up to our daily newsletter here .
