Robbie Williams' dream of bagging an Oscar has been dashed after his song was disqualified for sounding too similar to another tune.

Forbidden Road, from his biopic Better Man, was shortlisted earlier this week for Best Original Song. However, Academy Award bosses have since ruled it out of contention, stating it sounds too similar to I Got a Name from the 1973 film, The Last American Hero.

According to a letter sent out to voters in the music category, Robbie's track "incorporates material from an existing song that was not written for the film" and so it has been deemed ineligible for the Oscar, as reported by US site Variety.

This decision will be a bitter pill to swallow for the former Take That star, who has been on a global tour promoting Better Man.The biopic, set to hit cinemas on Boxing Day, delves into Stoke-born Robbie's life from childhood until 2003 – the year he broke records by playing three massive gigs at Knebworth, one more than Oasis.
