I was a teenager when Martin Luther King made his “I Have a Dream” speech. Now I’m a pensioner watching protests in London and America and feel desperately sad we haven’t made enough progress with race relations since then.

Thinking back to the racism I’ve heard from football crowds sickens me. I’m not talking about Premier League crowds, but parents watching local kids’ matches.

When Robert was at school, we had to travel all over Wales to take him to games. So Colin, his dad, decided he would start his own team in our village of Bradley, if Robert could get enough good players together.

Robert said his best friend at school was good with a ball. He was Jim Whitely, who went on to have a spell at Manchester City.
