The 53-year-old was relieved of his duties from his role as United's sporting director on Sunday - less than six months after arriving from Newcastle.
A club statement read: "Dan Ashworth will be leaving his role as sporting director of Manchester United by mutual agreement.
We would like to thank Dan for his work and support during a transitional period for the club and wish him well for the future." Ashworth, who started work on July 1, was described as one of "the top sporting directors in the world" when he joined by Sir Jim Ratcliffe.
