Ricky Gervais, 61, took to Twitter this evening to lighten the mood after Liz Truss, 47, announced her resignation as Prime Minister earlier today.The After Life star teased his appointment “wouldn’t be the weirdest news” as fans rushed to the comment section to share their thoughts on the matter.Gervais tweeted out a picture of himself hilariously superimposed outside of the Downing Street residence, telling jokes while a beer rested on his podium.“And it wouldn't even be in the top 10 weirdest news stories of the year,” Gervais captioned the photograph with a laughing emoji.

Gervais’ followers rushed to the comments section to join in on the hilarity in the wake of today’s political chaos. In her resignation speech, Truss announced that a new leader is to be selected next Friday.Truss succeeded Boris Johnson as Prime Minister on September 6 after defeating Rishi Sunak in the Conservative Party leadership contest.Resigning after just 44 days in office, she will be remembered as the shortest-serving PM in British history.There have been reports of Johnson standing for re-election, as the Conservative Party have just one.
