And while it won’t be released until Feb. 25, Variety can exclusively preview the first chapter. Booklist has called the novel “a sharp-eyed examination of the toll pursuing a career in the arts can take, even and especially when one is at the top of her game.” In this excerpt, Adria Benedict — the much-decorated grande dame of the entertainment industry — is on her way to the Colorado film festival that kicks off the awards-season sprint.

This represents her chance to break the all-time record and win her fourth Best Actress prize, as long as the film’s campaign actually runs her in lead rather than supporting.

On the flight to the festival, she knows she must convince the backers of the movie that she’s the film’s real star — even as her co-star is on the plane with her.
