Harry Maguire thought he rescued a point for the Reds with a late equaliser to cancel out Calvin Bassey's earlier strike. However, United conceded in the seventh minute of stoppage time through an Alex Iwobi goal to fall to a narrow defeat.
The result ended a run of four consecutive wins for United and, more importantly, lost ground in the race for Champions League qualification.
Erik ten Hag's team are now eight points adrift of fourth-placed Aston Villa following their win over Nottingham Forest on Saturday.
