In Wednesday's episode of Race Across the World, Betty opens up to her brother James about a difficult health struggle. After almost losing their passports last week, the siblings are dealt more trouble when they travel from Bukittinggi in Indonesia to the seventh checkpoint, and the country’s capital, Jakarta. The pair have a nightmare bus journey before arriving in South Sumatra, where their string of bad luck continues when the taxi they’re travelling in bursts its tyre.

After taking a job to build up their funds, they take time out in a local park to talk about their journey so far and Betty speaks about her health struggles.

She reveals she was diagnosed with MRKH at the age of 16. “It means that I don’t have a uterus, I don’t have a womb and I only have one kidney as well," Betty explains. "I think as a young woman, you’re told you’re going to marry, you’re going to have a family, and from a young age when that’s taken away from you, it does put doubts in your mind.

Doubts in your purpose as a person, I suppose. "I think on the journey we have learnt that speaking to each other is actually not that scary.” James adds: "And it helps, quite a lot and now we could easily pick up the phone to one another and talk about whatever." Betty goes on to reveal: "Yes, it’s definitely helped. "Probably over the last two legs I think my frustrations and down moments have come periodically.
