Charles Ingram
Charles William Ingram (born 6 August 1963) is an English novelist, computer repairman, and former British Army major who became known for being accused and convicted of cheating on the television game show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? in 2001, after winning the maximum prize of one million pounds. Following a lengthy trial at Southwark Crown Court, he was convicted on a single count of procuring the execution of a valuable security by deception. He was convicted of an unrelated insurance fraud in 2003, and ordered to resign his commission as a major by the Army Board.

The drama of ITV's Quiz has proved too much for some viewers, who found the scenes more tense than watching a real-life Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?

show. The TV production of the west end play that detailed the infamous moment that Charles Ingram cheated his way to £1m by going all the way on the Chris Tarrant hosted quiz in 2001.

It was later found that he was being helped by his wife, in a coughing scandal that was unearthed by eagle-eared producers and his money was rescinded in one of the most dramatic moments in TV history.

With Michael Sheen taking the role of Tarrant and James Macfadyen is Ingram in the three-part series that has become one of the biggest hits of the coronavirus lockdown.
