Charles Ingram
Charles William Ingram (born 6 August 1963) is an English novelist, computer repairman, and former British Army major who became known for being accused and convicted of cheating on the television game show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? in 2001, after winning the maximum prize of one million pounds. Following a lengthy trial at Southwark Crown Court, he was convicted on a single count of procuring the execution of a valuable security by deception. He was convicted of an unrelated insurance fraud in 2003, and ordered to resign his commission as a major by the Army Board.

Actress Helen McCrory believes a question mark hangs over the conviction of the Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? quiz show cheats.

Major Charles Ingram won the jackpot in 2001, helped by Tecwen Whittock, who coughed if he said a right answer. Ingram, his wife Diana and Whittock were convicted of trying to cheat the show, hosted by Chris Tarrant.

But Helen, who plays their QC in Quiz, an ITV drama about the case, said: “The fact that a lot of people at the time didn’t hear the cough... “Chris Tarrant didn’t hear the cough, the person sitting opposite didn’t hear the cough, people either side didn’t hear the cough, yet for some reason he [Charles Ingram] heard the cough – really? “Now for some reason maybe he did.
