The Government is set to raise the price of some alcoholic drinks in a couple of days. From February 1, a tax hike will see wines and spirits with a higher alcohol content go up.
Inititally, the duty was put in place on August 3, 2023, however, the former Conservative government placed a temporary pause on this.
The alcohol tax itself will rise in line with the Retail Price Indext at 3.6% but will also see the introduction of a new system to tax wines based on strength.
For example, the futy on a bottle of gin will rise by 32p while wine at 14% abv will increase by 54p respecitvely. The Wine and Spirit Trade Association estimated that with the new duty hikes introduced in August, a 14.5% abv red wine would have risen in price by 98p in 18 months.
