Dame Prue Leith has recalled the horrific moment she drowned a bag of kittens with her mother as a child, dubbing the ordeal a “traumatic experience.” The Great British Bake Off judge detailed the incident in her memoir entitled, I’ll Try Anything Once, which takes a deep dive into Prue’s career from her immigration to the UK in the 1960s to opening her own cooking classes in the country’s capital.

While the book is undoubtedly filled with funny tidbits and laughable moments, one particularly dark except has shocked fans so much they are flocking to social media to share their concern. The 82 year old judge, who grew up in South Africa, wrote: “'My mother and I, then 11, had just drowned some kittens… and for weeks I imagined those poor dead creatures. “Too many kittens was a frequent occurrence and there had come a day when my mother, unable to find homes for yet another litter, decided to drown the latest batch.” Prue said she did “protest”, but her mother maintained: "Darling, it has to be done. They are only a few hours old. They will hardly know it’s happening.” Her mother emphasised that they need only hold them beneath the water for a short time, and yet, Prue said they “fought like the devil for life.” Ultimately, the Cape Town-born chef held the animals underneath until they “stopped mewing.” Reacting to the shocking revelation on Twitter, one user wrote: “Just read about Dame Prue Leith and her recalling how she drowned a litter of kittens as a child.

Somethings you are better off to deal with yourself, I just don’t know how anyone could do that even as a child.” “What a hideous confession," another said.
