A prison guard has been found not guilty of having an inappropriate relationship and phone sex with a prisoner. It was alleged Ruth Shmylo, 26, of Pontypridd, had an affair with inmate Harri Pullen, now housed in Strangeways, while she was working as a prison officer and he was a prisoner at HMP Parc in Bridgend.

Prosecutors claimed she had failed to report his advances and actively engaged in their relationship, which involved phone sex, Wales Online reports. Giving evidence she said: “I would never be friends with somebody who threatened to kill my family, kill me, threaten me. I’d never be friends with Harri Pullen… (speaking with him on the phone) It was the safest way to keep me and my family safe.” During the trial at Cardiff Crown Court, jurors had heard Shmylo and Pullen were alleged to have been in a relationship between December 1, 2020, and April 17, 2021.

She began working at the prison in October 2020 but did not pass her probationary period and was released from her employment in April 2021.
