After the Duchess of Sussex wore the necklace, it was reported that she had done so as a tribute to her late mother-in-law. Additionally, Meghan sported a diamond cross necklace that was rumoured to have once belonged to Diana, although this claim has been met with scepticism from someone close to the late princess, who "didn't recognise [the necklace] at all." Allegedly, the parallels drawn with Diana have irked William, who is said to be "bothered" by the portrayal of Meghan as a modern-day Diana, according to an insider.
The source suggested that while William doesn't wish to deny Harry the chance to honour their mother's memory, he is uncomfortable with any direct comparisons to her, including those involving his wife, Kate Middleton, which was recently revealed that she will not be attending the Trooping The Colour rehearsal due to ongoing cancer treatment.The source told Closer magazine that William finds the likening of Meghan to Diana "beyond tasteless and offensive."
