A pre-inquest review has opened into the death of a suspected murderer accused of killing a Crufts dog breeder. Alex Verdu Munoz, an Argentinian national, died in custody at Strangeways prison in Manchester on May 15, 2022 while awaiting trial.
The 26-year-old had been charged with murdering Valerie Freer, 68, who died after being stabbed in the neck outside her home in the village of Whittington, near Lichfield, on February 24, 2022.
She was found on her driveway by paramedics at around 10.53am. When he returned he found Mrs Freer - who he had been married to for 46 years - in a pool of blood. She had endured 16 stab wounds, 10 puncture wounds and scratches around the neck, according to her post-mortem.
