Healthy pigs are being culled due to a lack of butchers in pork processing plants, farmers have revealed. Around 35,000 healthy pigs have been killed, according to the National Pig Association (NPA).

The industry body estimates that there are more than 200,000 animals being held on farms amid staff shortages that are preventing them from being processed. Farmers are also being hit with higher costs for animal feed as they are having to keep animals of farms for longer. A shortage of EU workers, caused by Brexit and the pandemic, has also hit the industry hard.

Around 40 independent producers have recently left the sector due to the ongoing issues, the NPA said. Now, the NPA and National Farmers’ Union (NFU) have secured an emergency summit at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) which will be attended by representatives from major retailers and pork processors.
