Singer Teena Marie rose to fame in the 1970s, thanks to her distinctive voice. She soon became a prominent figure on the R&B and soul scene in America, having been discovered by Motown Records label boss Berry Gordy, who decided to sign Teena as a solo artist.
Her debut album, Wild and Peaceful, was released in March 1979. The album included the track I'm a Sucker for Your Love, a duet between Teena and producer and singer Rick James, who had been instantly impressed with her singing.The song reached the Top 10 of the R&B chart in the US and became one of Teena's standout hits.
Another duet between Teena and Rick, Fire and Desire, appeared on his album Street Songs in 1981. Teena's second album, Lady T - named after the nickname she'd acquired at Motown Records - was produced by Ricard Rudolph.The album include Behind the Groove, which reached No 6 in the UK in 1980, proving to be her biggest UK hit.
After this, the singer took full control of her next two albums; Irons in the Fire and It Must Be Magic. She produced every track on both albums.
