A gang of paving flag thieves is being hunted by police after homes on FIVE streets were targeted for valuable York stone, it's been revealed.

Police chiefs are appealing for information and any witnesses after what they called a 'spate' of recent thefts. Anyone with York stone flags in their gardens or pathways is being urged to remain 'vigilant' and make sure gates are always locked and CCTV systems recording.

The warning has been issued in the Crompton area of north Bolton. Police there said they have received reports that York stone paving flags have been stolen on Astley Street, Norton Street, St Augustine Street, Cloister Street and Wilmot Street in the area. The warning comes after the Manchester Evening News told how a woman was stunned to wake up and find her garden path had been dug up - targeted by thieves she says for its valuable York stone paving - in Whitefield, near Bury.

She said she feared a gang was in operation, with thefts from paths or driveways also understood to have been reported in the Unsworth and Tottington areas of Bury.
