Police powers have been stepped up in Salford after a man was attacked in an alleyway near a shopping centre. The man was attacked near the Salford Precinct, in an alleyway off Mather Way, at around 11pm last night (Wednesday).

Police and paramedics were called to the scene. The man was taken to hospital for treatment. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening or life-changing, police said. Officers are now trying to track down the male suspect. Last night, Greater Manchester Police put a Section 60 order in place for the area covering the shopping centre and surrounding streets.

This gives police the power to stop-and-search anyone for weapons 'without suspicion'. The order - which covers Nursery Street, Seedley Road, Fitzwarren Street, Heywood Way, Hankinson Way, Belvedere Road and the A6 - will remain in place throughout today.
