Police react to 'large gatherings of youths wearing balaclavas' at bus station

Police chiefs have authorised emergency powers to officers on the ground after reports of 'large gatherings of youths wearing balaclavas' around a bus station.

A dispersal order, under Section 35 of the Anti-Social Behaviour Act, was put in place in Stockport town centre at just before 6.30pm tonight - Monday - and will last for 48 hours.

The order gives officers temporary extended powers to remove individuals from an area if they are suspected of engaging in anti-social behaviour. A map of a large area which falls under the order has been published. The corridor extends along the A6 and also takes in the railway station and the McDonald's along the route, as well as Merseyway Shopping Centre.
