Police are investigating after a 'hateful' remark was posted online referring to the death of Gary Speed. The former footballer, who played for Bolton Wanderers, tragically took his own life aged 42 in 2011 while serving as manager of the Welsh national team.
A comment mocking Speed was posted on X (formerly Twitter) following the FA Cup match between Newcastle United, another of his former clubs, and local rivals Sunderland on Saturday (January 6).
The message referred to Speed's death and contained homophobic connotations, Chronicle Live reports. It was quickly condemned online and reported to Northumbria Police.
While the account responsible has since been deleted, Northumbria Police has confirmed it is investigating the post. Try MEN Premium now with our amazing New Year offer...
