Police have dropped their investigation into a Tory MP who was arrested after a woman accused him of rape. The man in his 50s was arrested on August 1 and taken into custody at an east London police station before later being released on bail.
However, police now say that after a “thorough investigation”, the case did not meet the threshold of evidence to bring a criminal prosecution.
The alleged victim told the Sunday Times she intended to appeal against the decision under the Victims' Right to Review Scheme.
The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons and has always protested his innocence, has been informed of the decision. He was backed at the time by his local association and did not have the Tory whip suspended during the police
