However, his dad's relative and the presenter's aunt, Mabel Osman, 90, has now said that their side of the family still attempted to keep in touch with him.
Richard, 50, previously said his world was turned upside down when his father walked out on his family, and that his paternal grandmother proceeded to cease all contact, not even bothering to send him so much as a Christmas card.
The star opened up about his bitter family rift in the book Letter to My Younger Self, which features interviews with 100 “inspiring people on the moments that shaped their lives”, published in aid of the Big.
