Manchester has won a lot of accolades in recent years - but this one is a little different. Two of the city's cemeteries have been handed a top prize for the 'peaceful contemplation and beauty' they offer.
Gorton Cemetery and Phillips Park Cemetery were recognised in the National Cemetery of the Year Awards as the cleanest and most taken care of in Manchester.
Both cemeteries won the 2023/24 gold prize in the Large Burial Ground category of the competition which was hosted earlier last month. At the most difficult time for families, Manchester is offering some small amount of peace. Both Blackley and Southern Cemeteries were awarded with the ‘Keep Britain Tidy’ and ‘Green Flag Award’, both given for public spaces that have attained a high standard of accessible green space.
