Pipers help West Lothian pupils beat a retreat

Pupils at Calderwood Primary in East Calder marked the end of the working week to the sound of the pipes, thanks to a special surprise.

Housebuilder Robertson Homes organised for the Midlothian-based Glencorse Pipe Band to play a Beating Retreat at the school as the children left their classrooms for the weekend.

Pupils and their families stayed after school to watch the beating retreat, which marks the end of the working day, being played as a taster of what to expect at the upcoming East Calder Gala Day.Robertson Homes is sponsoring the bands playing at the Gala event on 10 June, which includes the Glencorse Pipe Band.Delighted Kelly Grieve, Acting Principal Teacher, said: “The pipe band was a lovely surprise for our learners when they left school on Friday.“East Calder Gala Day is an important event for our community and thanks to Robertson Homes for supporting it.”Karen Mercer, sales manager at Robertson Homes, said: “We wanted to generate some excitement ahead of the Gala Day which we are proud to support and to give the children and their families something special to mark the end of a hard week’s work.: She added: “There’s nothing quite like the sound of a pipe band and it was great to see so many people enjoying watching and listening and we hope that it encourages everyone to come out and see the bands play at the Gala.” Don't miss the latest news from the West Lothian Courier.
