Clement’s motivation, he explains, was to “feel what the people feel”. But the Belgian knows his task is to ensure there are no more false dawns. The wobbles have hit their bid to claim only a second Premiership crown since Gers tumbled down the tiers and suffered shockers like that extra-time loss to Rovers at Easter Road.
Before their stuttering title bid resumes next Sunday, it’s Hearts in the Scottish Cup semi-final. And Clement knows he can’t contemplate failure a decade on from when Gers couldn’t even land the lower league silverware spoils.
