Peter Bart: Could Awards-Season Galas Help Cure Hollywood’s Movie Malaise?

EXCLUSIVE: Elvis filmmaker Baz Luhrmann has been tapped to receive the Advanced Imaging Society’s Harold Lloyd Award at the 2023 Lumiere Awards, which are taking place at The Beverly Hills Hotel on February 10.

It is a blockbuster morning as far as the Producers Guild of America is concerned as it revealed film and TV nominations Thursday for its 34th annual PGA Awards.

After last night’s Golden Globe thing, we had only less than 12 hours to regroup and prepare for the real deal: First SAG nominations, and then DGA, the initial two major guild indicators of where the real sentiment may lie before Oscar voting begins tomorrow. With Producers Guild, often a very Oscar-predictive list as well, still to come also tomorrow the best barometers of where industry thinking is at the moment will be on the table.

The Screen Actor’s Guild had their year-end say at sunrise and a few hours later, the Directors Guild of America revealed their own nominees for the 2023 DGA Awards. For the most prestigious honor, Theatrical Feature Film, the nominees are Todd Field (“TAR”), Joseph Kosinski (“Top Gun: Maverick”), Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (“Everything Everywhere All At Once”), Martin McDonagh (“The Banshees of Inisherin”) and Steven Spielberg (“The Fablemans”).

The Directors Guild of America has nominated Tár‘s Todd Field, Top Gun: Maverick‘s Joseph Kosinski, Everything Everywhere All at Once‘s Daniel Kwan & Daniel Scheinert, The Banshees of Inisherin‘s Martin McDonagh and The Fabelmans’ Steven Spielberg for the top feature film prize at its 75th annual DGA Awards.

The 73rd Berlin International Film Festival will open on February 16, 2023, with the world premiere of She Came to Me, by Rebecca Miller.

ACTRESS Jennifer Coolidge made a huge blunder while presenting the award for Best Supporting Actor in a TV Series during the 80th Golden Globes. As the iconic White Lotus star presented the award, she said: "And the Oscar goes to..." which made the audience at the 80th Golden Globe Awards laugh and cheer for her as she immediately recognized her mistake. The joke came after Coolidge rattled off a hilarious monologue about her fear of presenting the important award because of her worries about tripping or mispronouncing the nominees' names.

Rick Tuber, a TV and film editor who won an Emmy and an ACE Eddie Award for his work on NBC’s classic medical drama ER, died January 7 of a heart attack at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles. He was 69.
