Police investigating a trio of incidents which saw a man attacked and a car torched before gunshots were heard the following day have confirmed the incidents were ‘linked and targeted’.

Cops have launched an investigation after a series of 'reckless and dangerous' incidents in North Ayrshire which included 'gunshots' being heard in Saltcoats over the weekend.

Gunshots were heard in a North Ayrshire street the day after a car was set on fire and a man suffered a serious head injury in a neighbouring town.

A top detective says a young man was "attacked and killed for no reason" at the weekend as an investigation into the suspicious death was launched.

"Clearly a vehicle must have been used to transport the tools and equipment so we are keen to hear about any vehicle movements in this area either late on Thursday evening or early on Friday morning."In particular we would like to trace a white coloured Peugeot Boxer van which was seen in the area around this time."I would also ask that anyone who may have been driving in the area in a vehicle fitted with a dash-cam device take time to examine their device to see if it holds anything that might be of assistance to us.
