When most people think of Emmerdale’s much loved matriarch Faith Dingle, the first name that springs to mind is Sally Dexter, who captured the hearts of the nation with her heartbreaking portrayal of the character’s battle and subsequent death - as a result of breast cancer. But long before Sally took the reins, the character was portrayed by another familiar face, Gillian Jephcott, who famously played the role from 2000 to 2004.

Emmerdale Cain Dingle actor Jeff Hordley has teased that viewers will be saying goodbye to a major character during the soap's 50th anniversary celebration.The ITV soap, which began in 1972, will celebrate its 50th anniversary with a whole month of stories this October, which bosses said will "make you laugh, make you cry, make you surprised and stunts that are going to rock your world."Speaking exclusively to Daily Star and other press, Jeff has revealed that his character Cain will have a huge role to play as viewers say goodbye to fan favourite Faith Dingle - following her diagnosis with terminal cancer.READ NEXT: Emmerdale backstage secrets - Plastic food, real graves, tributes and spelling errorsHe said: "My character is involved in the Faith storyline, so there's all this going on. "I'm personally saddened to be losing the brilliant Sally Dexter, but it will give us some great stories going forward."Speaking about the storyline, which has seen Faith receive palliative treatment in recent weeks, Executive Producer Jane Hudson added: "The Faith story, which is such an emotional, heartbreaking story, is going to be huge across our 50th."I think everyone involved in that story is pulling out some of the most spectacular performances I have seen in soap for a long time."She also explained that the Faith's death will also open the month of episodes that mark Emmerdale's 50th anniversary."As we start the month, we will be focusing on our Faith storyline, which is a huge storyline for us at the moment.
