Elsa Keslassy International Correspondent Mia Hansen-Løve, one of France’s leading filmmakers whose movies have played at Cannes, Berlin and Toronto, will next direct “If Love Should Die,” an ambitious feature film about the life of visionary English writer and philosopher Mary Wollstonecraft. Mubi, the auteur-driven global distribution and streaming powerhouse, is producing “If Love Should Die” with Georgina Paget and Thembisa Cochrane at U.K.

2021 was a big year for Léa Seydoux. Having appeared in one of the year’s most anticipated films in Wes Anderson’s “The French Dispatch,” Seydoux also reprised her role as Madeleine Swann in the latest addition to the Bond franchise, “No Time To Die,” helping the film become the fourth highest-grossing film of 2021 with a worldwide box office total of $774.2 million.

Because a welcome perch across the pond can make all the difference, especially given the recent crunch on the international scene.  “Today, the market is extremely polarized,” says Alice Lesort, who heads sales for Les Films du Losange. “There are still films that perform extremely well abroad, but the number of films has shrunk; there are still films that take the spotlight, but the spotlight now focuses on fewer of them.” Bringing the Léa Seydoux-led “One Fine Morning” to Toronto after previous berths in Cannes and Telluride and an upcoming slot in New York, director Mia Hansen-Løve has proven an outlier several times over. For one thing, at only 41-years-old, she’s already made eight features; for another, all but one of those features has seen U.S. distribution.

Wilson Chapman editor Cinéfest Sudbury International Film Festival, one of the largest film festivals in Canada, has set its lineup for the 2022 edition. The festival will open with a gala screening of “Ashgrove,” Jeremy LaLonde’s Canadian drama about a scientist in the distant future attempting to find a cure for a water shortage crisis. The festival will host nine gala screenings in total, including abortion drama “Call Jane,” country music documentary “The Return of Tanya Tucker: Featuring Brandi Carlile,” Anna Kendrick film “Alice, Darling” and closing night film “Presque (Beautiful Minds).” In addition to the gala screenings, Cinéfest will also host 18 special presentation screenings, 19 films in its Canadian features spotlight, 10 in its Canadian documentary spotlight, five in its Indigenous filmmakers series, 19 in its world cinema series, four in its world doc lineup and 68 short films. Notable films set to screen at the festival include Toronto International Film Festival premiere “Emily” starring Emma Mackey, Cannes Palme D’or winner “Triangle of Sadness,” Mia Hansen-Løve’s “One Fine Morning” and documentary “The Issue With Tissue” about the Indigenous people who live in Northern Ontario’s boreal forest.

Bergman Island’s writer-director, Mia Hansen-Løve, was herself in a relationship with an older film-maker, Olivier Assayas – and the story starts to feel like a refracting prism in its overlap of characters and creator. In the hands of Hansen-Løve, it’s a delicate millefeuille, layering story upon story, character upon character, until it’s hard to peel them apart.

Guy Lodge Film Critic“One Fine Morning” sounds an innocuous title for a grownup relationship drama — destined, perhaps, to be confused on streaming menus with the George Clooney-Michelle Pfeiffer romcom “One Fine Day” — and in a sense, the mellow, melancholic cinema of French writer-director Mia Hansen-Løve is its own kind of comfort viewing. But as with many facets of her filmmaking, there’s a smarter, sadder, more literary undertow to the title’s sunny simplicity.

Manori Ravindran International EditorIsabelle Huppert, this year’s recipient of the Berlinale’s Honorary Golden Bear, has pulled out of attending the festival after testing positive for COVID in Paris.The festival confirmed the French star’s absence on Monday night.“Unfortunately, today Isabelle Huppert has been tested positive for the coronavirus in Paris and therefore she will not be able to attend the Berlin International Film Festival,” reads a statement from the Berlinale.“While informing the festival, she emphasized that she feels very dedicated to the Berlinale and wants to participate in any possible way also to support her latest film ‘À Propos de Joan.'”Berlinale artistic director Carlo Chatrian explained that because Huppert “doesn’t feel sick,” the festival will go ahead with its planned ceremony on Tuesday honoring the “Elle” actor with its lifetime achievement award.
