Black Country, New Road have covered Billie Eilish‘s song ‘Happier Than Ever’ during a recent show on their current US tour.The rock band performed the track — the title track from Eilish’s 2021 album — at New York City’s Bowery Ballroom yesterday (September 5), adding new elements to the part-sombre, part-thunderous rendition.BCNR violinist Georgia Ellery introduces classical strings to the lullaby-like intro, before drummer Charlie Wayne belts out the song’s punk-pop latter half, with vocal assists from the rest of the band as they mosh on stage. The cover elsewhere enlists keys from May Kershaw and saxophone riffs courtesy of Lewis Evans.

Days before the release of Black Country, New Road’s towering sophomore LP, Ants From Up There (42nd on our 50 best albums of 2022 list), lead singer Isaac Wood left the band abruptly, citing the onset of debilitating depression and anxiety that made it “difficult to play guitar and sing at the same time.” Instead of calling it quits — and without even taking much time to process the loss — the remaining six members of the group wrote an entirely new set of songs to perform on their ensuing world tour. Unreleased until now, eight of these tracks have been immortalized in a new concert film: Live at Bush Hall.

Black Country, New Road have released a new live film featuring eight brand new songs.“We didn’t want to do a studio album”, says pianist May Kershaw. “We wrote the new tracks specifically to perform live, so we thought it might be a nice idea to put out a performance”.Filmed over three nights at Bush Hall in London in December, the band decided against the convention of cutting together multiple performances to look like one and instead gave each show a distinct visual style, which they cut between throughout the film.“We had concerns from live sessions we’ve seen or done in the past”, says guitarist Luke Mark. “They are very obviously clumped together visually from multiple performances.
